How Does Money Feel About You?

Writer: PepzPepz

No this is not an ode to 50 Cent’s I Get Money, but that song is still the jam!

Over the past five years, I’ve been diving deep into my relationship with money. You know that thing that we stress about, work for, save, go shopping with…the thing that everybody has a relationship with whether we are aware of it or not.And let me tell you...it’s been a deep dive (at points it felt like I was face to face with the titanic 🧊🛥)

For most of my life, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with money. See I thought the only things we did with money was make it and spend it. Nothing else, nothing more. Saving money seemed like a foreign and boring concept, investing seemed impossible and expensive (it’s actually more expensive to not invest), and to be honest based on what I saw growing up, spending seemed more appealing, more successful, and plainly more fun.

I used to always say if you want somebody to make you money, call me. If you want somebody, to save and manage your money, you definitely need to find somebody else.

Since beginning my conscious journey with money, I’ve been learning and applying the skillset of investing in the foreign exchange and crypto currencies markets, I’ve created an emergency saving’s fund, and a great mentor stepped into my life whose journey in life, career, and in finances really reminded me of mine. My mentor provided me with some great resources, but most of all through working with my mentor I uncovered how my habits developed and why they developed.

My mentor helped me realize that underneath my then-toxic relationship to money was the limiting believe of me not feeling worthy. So because I felt unworthy of better financial standing, developing better financial acumen didn’t seem worth it.

True change is only effective when you have a burning and non-negotiable desire for it. The act of engaging in poor habits whether due to irresponsibility, lack of knowledge, lack of desire will only change when they are too painful to bare.

Money aside, change is only effective when the cost of what you’re doing is too high a price in relation to what you’re giving up or getting in return. In a song I wrote, I wrote “if it didn’t hurt, would you have learned?” meaning we never learn what we need to change, how we need to change, and why we need to change until it hurts us enough.

If you're reading this blog, there is something in you that you probably would love to see transform positively.

To help you do so, I leave you with the following questions:

  1. What is an area in my life (i.e. physical, financial, career, emotional) that I would like to transform?

  2. Why?

  3. How do I behave in this area [i.e. overspending (financial), underpricing my services (financial/career), overeating (physical), etc.]?

  4. What has been the cost (s) I’ve paid for with said behavior?

  5. What action step (s) can I take now that would move me in the right direction?
